¡Hay Mucho Calor!

¡Hola Fonzfam!

I try not to complain so I'm just going to make a comment about this last week...it was HOT! I'm not sure what was said on the news but we've had heat advisories going for a few days now from what I've heard. But with this heat comes many more opportunities to talk to even more people who normally wouldn't be open to conversation. Since we're all going through the heat together, it makes a great topic to start with somebody by asking them how the stay cool. Another thing is that when we're knocking on doors in the middle of the afternoon we're offered water(or Seltzer water, which is fine but you can't beat agua;) and then invited into the front entry to enjoy some temporary relief. Even though I've been a sweaty mess, I'll take it if it means we get to have better chances of spreading the gospel.

Our Zone Vision for this transfer in Tualatin is centered on the fact that we can expect miracles. Focusing on baptism and finding new people to teach, we came up with an acronym for M.I.R.A.C.L.E. since we're in the Tualatin Miracle Zone and all:) Each letter stands for something different to help us reach our goals.
M: Make it count by staying in the area(doing 3-2-1, 3 contacts, 2 doors, 1 BoM)

I: Invite to be baptized by 2nd lesson
R: Reachable daily goals(sharing daily goals in our district chat)
A: Always bring up baptism in each lesson
C: Contact at least 10 people daily
L: Leave the apartment by 10am
E: Enjoy until 9pm(making sure we're staying out to get those miracles)

With this idea we used Mosiah 8:18 as the foundational scripture which talks about how through our faith, we can "work mighty miracles" for the "benefit of our fellow beings." In our first full week we've already seen some amazing things which gets me excited for what our future holds.

We had a cool miracle that actually happened last night as we were in the final 15 minutes of our day. In those precious moments anything can happen. After some failed contacts I turn to Elder Clements and asked which direction the Spirit was telling him that we should go. He began walking and I followed. Just around the corner was a younger couple unloading their car of tons of baby shower gifts. We offer our help and they actually accepted it! We made a couple trips to their apartment and back with light conversation along the way. After it was said and done we shared the BoM with the soon to be father who took it and said he was open to learning more. He has a lot of family who are members so we talked about eternal families and how those truths can be found within the book. It's just so cool to me to see how God places those who need His message in our path. The hard part sometimes is to act on those opportunities, but it's always worth it when you do.

Right now we're pretty far into the Book of Mormon as we will finish up Alma this week. Today is Day 60 of the 90 Day Challenge so keep persevering to the end! I love what we just read in the last few chapters about Helaman and his 2,000 sons. Their valiance, their courage, and their faith had made them into men of God. I liked what Meghan had written to me about how the Lamanites fought with the strength of men. Which is great and all, but nothing compared to what she discovered about the Nephites, even the Stripling Warriors, which is that they fought with the strength of the Lord. We are in a constant battle on a daily basis with the adversary. We need all the reinforcements we can get. As the sons of Helaman aided Antipus in their fight against the Lamanites, so will God send blessings and angels to help us through our toughest trials. We will be victorious as we rejoice in the love and support of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I invite you to fortify your strongholds and continue to make preparations like Captain Moroni did to withstand the onslaught of the enemy. I'm so excited to serve on the battle front with my fellow friends and missionaries and I know you all at home are doing the same. I love you guys so much and I hope you keep cool this week!

Love,
Elder Fonnesbeck
