¡Hola Fonzfam!
So just like the title above says, we're going to have baptism this week! I'll explain the details later but first I want to thank you guys and anyone else who has sent me letters recently. Know that as a missionary there's no better way to end the day than going to the mailbox and finding a letter waiting for you. So thank you so much!
This week has been an exciting one filled with awesome teaching opportunities and the work of the Lord's hand in all our doings. At the beginning of the week we went to an older woman's apartment to teach both her and her grandson who lives with her. As we start talking we ask her if she's been able to read from the Libro de Mormón which she replies that she hasn't because the letters are too small for her to read. K
Keeping this in mind that night we found a copy of a large print LDM in our closet and began marking different scriptures on prophets, faith, baptism, and gifts of the Holy Ghost. By the end of the night this copy of the LDM was very colorful with rainbow tabs sticking out the side. The next day we stopped by her place and gifted it to her and her face lit up with excitement. She marveled at the size, smoothing the cover over with her hand. We explained how we had marked specific verses for her and so she began to open up to them, smiling at how she could finally see the words. It was amazing to see her excitement over such a simple yet powerful act to help her learn and understand.
There has been this one lady that we have been trying to get in and teach an actual sit down lesson with, but life has been getting in the way for her. Finally last Thursday we went by right before our youth sports activity expecting no one to answer. But she did. She immediately let us in and offered us food and water and a seat at her table. We only had around 15 minutes and she wanted to know what we were all about. So we told her, we told her how the restoration of the church came to be and the Spirit could've have been stronger.
When it got to the first vision I took a deep breath looked her in the eye and recited the account that the young prophet had. As I went along her eyes got wider, her jaw seemed to drop a little by little after every sentence. After sharing that with her she shared with us how that was absolutely incredible and that she knows that that has to be true. Her time was short too because the school bus was coming so we set up a return appointment and left her with the commitment to read chapter 11 of 3rd Nephi and to pray specifically about the things we had just shared with her. It was such a cool experience and one that will always been remembered.
So...like I mentioned at the beginning we are having a baptism this Wednesday of a little girl who's father is a convert of about 5 years. Her name is Dulce and missionaries have been working with her and her dad for years trying to help them come to church. It wasn't until recently that things started changing for the better and they began to come again. Because she is 9 this technically counts as a convert baptism which Elder Montague is super excited for because he hasn't had any baptisms yet either. Anyway we have been helping Dulce to finally decide and we are super happy for her and her decision. There is going to be another boy baptized with her on Wednesday, his name is Geo and he's 9 too. Together they'll be able to share their experience and the branch will be able to celebrate all together.
There is so much to say but never enough time. Know that I'm saving some good juicy stories for when I return. Stories that may or may not be "mom approved" but either way they'll be great memories to share with you all. Again thank you for all that you do and the support you give me from home. I give you my best and pray that your week will be full of miracles!
Con Amor,
Elder Fonnesbeck
