You know, life is short, God is great, and we are so blessed to have the gospel in our lives! Every week that passes by I'm so grateful for the many experiences I get to add to my ever growing bucket of them. Blessings that I get to experience with my companion and other missionaries are so precious to me. I'm grateful to have been keeping a journal, but it's been difficult to pick what to write to remember, there's just so much that goes on and so many thoughts that go through my head. It'll be cool to look back at this point of my mission and see all the blessings God has given me.
During this week we had zone conference between the Mount Hood, Oregon City, and Milwaukie Stakes. Elder Matheson and I were asked to do a training on effective Member Referral Lessons (MRLs). In preparation we reviewed four main parts of an effective MRL lesson: getting a name, teaching appropriate doctrine, extending a commitment to act, and establishing when to follow up. We had a great time and role played with a senior missionary couple who went home Saturday after 23 months. Make sure to say hi to the Baughs (who is the couple we first met in the mission office before my mission) who live in Tremonton:)
This miracle is just so awesome! We definitely have a God of miracles! Friday during our sit-down lesson with Jimmie we extended a bold commitment to have her pray her hardest for an answer and that it will come before the following night. So with that going on we had our daily scripture video chat with her the next day and asked her if she had gotten an answer yet. She then told us how during her prayer the night before she asked specifcally about baptism. She said that she had felt a comforting hand on her back, and that as she ended the prayer it peacefully left. This was her answer and so now she's committed to be baptized this weekend on May 12th!!! We're so pumped and we've never seen the power of promising blessings like this before!
Another cool thing that happened to us was in our last half hour of the week, which was last night. Because of meetings, church itself, and a worldwide youth devotional, we had spent all day in the church building. All we wanted to do was to get out and find somebody new to teach. And we did! We pulled up into a complex, said a quick prayer, got out, and looked up to say hi to a mom watching her son ride a scooter. We started with the basic "Hi! Have you ever talked with missionaries before?" She had but didn't know anything about the Book of Mormon, which we left her with one and set up another time to come back. Right after that we knocked on basically a random door and this energetic woman opened up. She happily greeted us and explained that she had worked a lot with missionaries over in Ghana as part of her welfare job. I told her how I have a cousin out there doing what I'm doing here. She grew up Baptist but had started to attend a non-denominational group. Her enthusiasm as a person just made us both feel great, especially when she offered to have us come back too! We'll have to turn these two over to the other Elders, but they were some cool miracles!
I can't believe Mother's Day is next week! I'm so excited for it and the chance to catch up with all of you. Until then I hope you have a great week and know I miss you so much!
Love,
Elder Fonnesbeck
