Yesterday our family had the opportunity to attend one of Elder Fonnesbeck's mission companion's homecoming. This companion was Elder AJ Matheson, his 5th Companion (the one who trained him to be a Zone Leader & they served over the Milwaukie Zone/Alder Creek YSA together for 3 transfers celebrating missionary milestones such as April General Conference, Mother's Day phone call home & Elder F's Hump Day on the 4th of July, plus many miracles and baptisms of precious friends) from March 2017 to July 2017.
We understand Elder Matheson was a hardworking and obedient missionary and became a close friend with Elder Fonnesbeck. He admired him and looked up to him through his leadership and disciplined obedience throughout their service together. They hope to continue their friendship after Elder Fonnesbeck returns home this June 2019.
Our family enjoyed congratulating Elder Matheson on his completed service in the OPM and for the chance to admire him as well in person for the first time. His homecoming message was on "Loving Your Neighbors", a great commandment but one many of us need to be reminded often. His message was from the heart as he shared some of the growth and experiences he learned as he pondered and applied this commandment. He ended by sharing his testimony of this and the gratitude he felt for the opportunity to serve his Heavenly Father and Savior. Such an amazing friend and example to all!
Afterward, Elder Matheson & his family welcomed our family into their lovely home. Over a delicious luncheon, we were able to mingle and learn more of the life of this great young man. It was a very worthwhile afternoon which blessed our testimonies and expanded our friendship circle too. It was a very busy yet special weekend for their family as Elder Matheson's sister & husband were visiting Utah from their home in China and introducing him to their newly adopted son, Aiden. A little mini AJ really;) Adorable little nephew! Their family is now an eternal family as the night before Elder Matheson's homecoming they were sealed in the Jordan River Temple. Thanks for your example AJ...may you and other returned missionaries continue to #Lighttheworld this Christmas season. Missionaries are an extension of our Savior as He guides and ministers alongside them in this challenging world. Our family feels privileged to be member missionaries and assist in the efforts to teach and minister to many friends in our community and throughout the world. We are blessed to have so many good friends in our lives.
